Steve Thomas

The Jackson Memorial  Library  in Tenants Harbor will open its fourth annual St. George  Literary Series with Steve Thomas speaking and reading from his book, The Last Navigator. The event is free and will take place at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 30 at the Ocean View Grange in Martinsville, with a reception before at 5:30 p.m.

Steve Thomas is the Emmy Award-winning host of the This Old House PBS series; he has also produced and directed series for The History Channel  and PBS. Steve works with Planet Green as a green building and renovation expert.

There is another side to Steve –he is a master yachtsman. When he was thirteen he crewed a yacht racing to Hawaii and back to Seattle. As he says, “I was hooked.”  In the early 1980s he journeyed to the remote Micronesian island of Satawal to learn the ancient technique of star path navigation under the master navigator Mau Piailug. This “great and romantic dream,” as Steve calls it, came at a time when the wise elders of the islands were anxious to pass on their knowledge. Since Micronesia has an oral tradition they were concerned that The Talk of the Sea and the highly secret Talk of Light would disappear with their deaths.

The evening promises to be entertaining as well as informative. Steve is a dynamic speaker, much in demand around the country.

Proceeds from the sale of his book, The Last Navigator, go to the Building Fund.
