Starting Seeds from Scratch

John Fromer, Master GardenerJackson Memorial Library will celebrate the first day of spring by presenting a class on starting gardens from seed. On Friday, March 20 at 10:00 a.m. John Fromer from Appleton Ridge Flower and Vegetable Farm will be conducting a slideshow and presentation with ample time for questions and discussion.

The public is invited to come and learn how to “grow” gardening skills to incorporate seed starting. Starting from seed is easy after learning a few basics. According to Fromer, gardeners will be amazed at what they can grow and how the whole family can get involved. This is a must for anyone interested in spicing up their cuisine, canning and freezing or growing incredible cut flowers.

John Fromer is a Maine Master Gardener and has been gardening from seed for over 20 years. He and his wife Kathy own and operate Appleton Ridge Flower and Vegetable Farm. At the Farm, the Fromers grow specialty flowers, vegetables and herbs for fine restaurants in the area by starting seedlings and sowing seed directly into rows. They find that growing from seed is the only way to get the exotic varieties and keep costs under control.

Those attending are invited to bring their seed catalogs, ideas and questions to the event.
