75th Anniversary Celebrations

Seventy five years ago on February 16th, 1935 the Mary Elinor Jackson Memorial Library opened in Tenants Harbor. There are two events planned to celebrate this anniversary. On Tuesday, February 16th from 11am to 1pm there is an Opening Day Reception, and there is a 75th Anniversary Party on Saturday, February 20th from 2pm to 4pm with music, history and fun. Please bring any old photos, documents and stories about the library to share.

Records show that many familiar family names were present at the opening in 1935 including Allen, Aldrich, Biggers, Hocking, Holbrook, Humphrey, Hupper, Long, MacKenzie, Meservey and Miller. Many more have given a lot to the Library since then. Old and new families and library friends are all invited to help celebrate this anniversary.

Mary Elinor Jackson, born on Christmas Day, 1855, was known by friends as Nellie . A music teacher by training, she also had a large personal library. Crippling arthritis or osteitis confined her to bed later in life, and she enjoyed sharing her books with her many visitors, especially the young. She carefully recorded books she loaned out in a notebook. Following her death in 1933 residents organized to establish the Library.
