New Associate Director Hired

We are very pleased to announce that Samantha Cote will be joining the staff of JML as Associate Director for Youth and Technical Services. Sam grew up in Saco, Maine, is a graduate of Smith College and recently completed the MLIS program at the University of South Carolina. Most recently, she has been the children’s room assistant at the McArthur Public Library in Biddeford. Sam was President of the University of South Carolina’s New England Cohort Student Group and is currently on the planning committee for the state-wide Reading Round-up Conference. Samantha begins on March 1st.

Needed - Dry Barn until July

Used books are piling up in the Library basement. Do you have a dry barn or garage where we could store an 8 foot wide trailer filled with books for the Book Fair?

Valentine Treats to Support Pre-K

cupcakesDelicious, freshly baked treats are available through Valentine's Day at the Library. $1 a treat to benefit the Pre-K program. Isabella says, "I helped my Mom bake these cupcakes. They're great!"

Maine Community Fund Grant Received for Pre-K Program

Miss Kella reads to 4-year-oldsThe Jackson Memorial Library recently received a $4,730 grant from the Maine Charitable Foundation Fund of the Maine Community Foundation at the recommendation of the advisors. The funds will be used to purchase furniture and educational toys for the Library’s free Pre-K program for St George children. This program for 3- and 4-year-olds is two mornings a week in the library.

“This grant will help us provide the best materials available to support our program and activities,” said Yvonne Gloede, Library Director. “It will also enable us to purchase some new furniture for the Childrens' Room.”

Wooden blocks, a puppet theater and a sandbox are included in the grant proposal.

SOPA Protest

Did you go to a Wordpress site or Wikipedia on January 18th, just to find out that the site is down in protest of SOPA/PIPA? New Gadgets for Christmas?

Did you receive an iPad, Kindle, Nook, or other gadget for the holidays? Stop by the library with any of your questions, including how to download eBooks. It is best to call ahead to make sure someone is available to help you when you stop in. 

The library will also host an eReader basics program on January 21st at 11:00am.

Public Library Evolves

On Thursday, December 22nd the Maine Public Broadcasting Network aired a program entitled "Public Library Evolves". This program looks at the future of public library through the profiles of three libraries: Portland, South Berwick, and the Lithgow Library in Augusta. The program will re-air on the Maine Public Broadcast Network Friday, December 23rd at 9:00pm or you may watch it on their website:

Reading Mentors

Are you interested in teaching a young person grades K-2 to love reading? Do you have thirty minutes to an hour a week to spare? If so become a reading mentor at the St. George school and read one on one with a K-2nd grader once a week. Please contact Michelle Gill at or Yvonne at 372-8961 for more information. 

Silent Auction to Benefit the Library


The bidding period has been extended. You now have until January 3rd to place your bid. 

The Jackson Memorial Library is auctioning off a hand knit sweater by Eva Cushman of Port Clyde. The reserve is set at $40 and all proceeds will go to the library. Stop in to place your bid, or e-mail it to us at

Library Closing

The library will be closing at 3:00 on Wednesday, November 23rd. The library will also  be closed all day on Thanksgiving and the day after. We will reopen for normal hours Saturday, November 26th.
